For Lakeisha Hopkins, owner of OMG Donuts, that question sparked a journey that started in her own kitchen and grew into a thriving family-owned donut shop loved by the community.

During a conversation with Dawn-Dunavant Banks, Lakeisha shared the inspiring story behind OMG Donuts — from experimenting with recipes at home to creating some of the most unique donuts you’ll ever taste.

A Dream That Started in the Kitchen

In 2017, Lakeisha was getting ready for work when she saw a news story about someone opening their seventh donut shop. Instead of simply watching, she became curious.

She wondered, “How hard could it really be to make donuts?”

That curiosity quickly turned into action.

Lakeisha began researching donut-making techniques, studying recipes, and learning everything she could. That same week, she went to the store, bought ingredients, and started experimenting in her kitchen.

“I was literally just Googling, doing a lot of research, finding out how to do it,” Lakeisha shared.

The first donuts she created looked very different from the ones OMG Donuts offers today. But through dedication, testing, and countless batches, she continued improving her recipes until she found the perfect balance of flavor and texture.

For about two and a half months, Lakeisha spent her evenings baking, experimenting, and refining her creations.

Her biggest supporters? Her family.

Family, Flavor, and Finding the Perfect Recipe

With a background in the food industry, Lakeisha’s father became one of her biggest resources. She would ask him questions like:

- “Why does this donut feel too heavy?”

- “How can I make this lighter?”

- “What should I adjust in the recipe?”

His experience and advice helped guide her through the process.

Her mother, who is also an excellent cook, and her sisters contributed ideas and feedback as well. Together, her family helped shape the flavors and creativity that became the foundation of OMG Donuts.

What started as family taste-testing sessions eventually became a business built around bringing something different to customers.

More Than Just a Donut With Toppings

What makes OMG Donuts stand out is the attention to flavor.

Many donut shops create a basic donut and add toppings or fillings, but Lakeisha takes a different approach. Her goal is to create donuts where the flavor is part of the donut itself.

“If you get a lemon donut, it’s a lemon donut — not just lemon toppings on it,” she explained.

The same goes for seasonal favorites like pumpkin donuts. The flavor is baked into the donut rather than simply added on top.

This creative approach has allowed Lakeisha to develop more than 50 different donut flavors over the years.

While customers won’t see all 50 flavors at once, OMG Donuts offers a rotating selection. Each week, they feature:

- Six customer-favorite core donuts available every week

- Three rotating flavors that change regularly

This keeps the menu exciting and gives customers a reason to keep coming back.

The Difference Between Fried and Baked Donuts

When OMG Donuts first began, Lakeisha made fried donuts. However, after moving into their current location, she transitioned to creating exclusively baked donuts.

The change opened up new possibilities.

Baked donuts allow Lakeisha to infuse more flavor directly into the donut itself and create more variety. Instead of relying on one standard dough recipe with different toppings, each donut can have its own unique personality.

That creativity is what makes every bite of an OMG Donut experience different.

A Family Business Built With Love

At its heart, OMG Donuts is a family business.

During the week, Lakeisha works alongside her mother. On weekends, her wife, son, niece, and sister often join in to help — especially during busy events.

“It’s just me, myself, and my mom during the week,” Lakeisha shared. “My family comes in and pitches in whenever they can.”

Keeping the business family-focused has always been important to her.

As OMG Donuts continues to grow, Lakeisha hopes to eventually expand her team and create more opportunities for others while continuing to maintain the personal touch that customers love.

A Community That Keeps the Dream Alive

Like many small businesses, OMG Donuts faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a newer business, staying open was not easy — but the support from the community made all the difference.

“By the grace of God, we’re still here,” Lakeisha said. “We’re very thankful and grateful.”

The loyalty of customers helped keep the dream alive, and Lakeisha remains incredibly grateful for everyone who continues to support the shop.
